Visitors
Visitors are welcome at all services, forums and events at Umstead Park United Church of Christ. If you are planning to visit our church, here are some tips on what to expect:
Location and Directions
Parking
Parking is available in the church lot. Priority parking is available for those with handicaps and for low-emission vehicles and carpools. If the church parking lot is full, you may park in any of the surrounding business lots on Brownleigh Drive.
Dress
Our motto is “come as you are,” and this applies to what you wear! People wear everything from dressy casual to jeans and shorts and sandals. Wear what is comfortable for you!
Greeters Table
Church volunteers who serve as greeters on Sunday mornings will be happy to answer your questions, show you around and provide any assistance you require.
At the greeters’ table you find information pamphlets and name badges. You are invited to fill out an information sheet so that we have a record of your visit. You can note on the information sheet whether you would like a member of the ministerial staff to get in touch with you. You also can sign up to receive the church newsletter.
Worship
The worship service begins at 10:30 a.m. each Sunday in the worship space and generally lasts one hour. The service is usually led by our minister, Doug Long. Members of the congregation, known as Covenant Partners, also have roles during the service, such as leading the Call to Worship, reading the Scripture, reading from our Covenant, etc.
Communion
Communion is held on the first Sunday of the month. Everyone is welcome to receive Communion. To participate, you tear off a small piece of bread and partially dip it in the communion cup. The cup contains grape juice.
Nursery
A nursery is provided for infants through Pre-K. It is staffed by volunteers from the church. A greeter will be happy to direct you to the nursery.
Children
During the service, pre-K through fifth-graders are invited to come forward for a brief lesson usually led by Kate Forer, Associate Minister. Afterward, children may go to Children's Church, which consists of lessons from the UCC and the Center for Progressive Christianity. Children's Church is led by adult volunteers. For more information about Children's Church, see Children.
Safe Church Policy
All volunteers who work with children and youth must undergo a background check, as required by our Safe Church Policy. For more information about this policy, go to Safe Church.
Welcome dinners
Visitors are invited to find out more about the church by attending a potluck welcome dinner in a member’s home on the second Saturday of each month. There is no formal agenda, just a relaxed evening of good food and conversation. Details about welcome dinners and other church events appear at News/Calendar
